Preparing for your stay in Méribel: the complete checklist for a successful vacation

Get out...

Are you planning your next skiing vacation in Méribel? Between booking accommodation, purchasing lift passes, packing your bags, and organizing transportation, it's easy to get overwhelmed. As long-time visitors to Méribel, and now welcoming guests to our apartment in Méribel Mottaret for the first time, we've compiled all the essential tips to help you prepare for your stay with complete peace of mind.

Whether you're coming with your family and children, as a couple for a romantic getaway, or with friends for a week of intensive skiing, this checklist will guide you step by step, from the first click of your reservation to your arrival on the slopes of Les 3 Vallées.

When and how to book your accommodation in Méribel?

Méribel is one of the most popular resorts in the French Alps. Located in the heart of the 3 Vallées ski area—the largest ski area in the world—the resort fills up very quickly during peak periods.

The right time to book

For the most popular periods (Christmas holidays, February holidays, and long weekends), we recommend booking **4 to 6 months in advance**. For the quiet weeks in January or March, 2 to 3 months in advance is sufficient.

The criteria to prioritize for your housing

At an altitude of 1,800 meters, Méribel Mottaret offers a significant advantage: ski-in, ski-out access. No more early morning shuttles or long walks in ski boots. This is an important factor to consider, especially if you are traveling with children or beginners.

Also check the proximity of shops (bakery, mini-market, ski rental) and the availability of practical amenities: heated ski storage, parking, dishwasher, etc.

Our apartment in Méribel Mottaret

Our accommodation, **L’Échappée Cosy**, meets all these criteria: located at the foot of the slopes of the 3 Vallées ski area, a stone's throw from the shops and a first ski run before taking the lifts, it comfortably accommodates families and groups of friends in a warm and functional setting.

Buying ski passes: online or on site?

The purchase of vacation packages represents a significant portion of the vacation budget. Here's how to optimize this step.

The different packages available

There are two main options available to you. The Méribel pass gives you access to the resort's 150 km of slopes, ideal for intermediate skiers or those who prefer to explore one area in depth. The 3 Vallées passopens the doors to 600 km of linked slopes, from Courchevel to Val Thorens via Les Menuires—perfect for experienced skiers who want to vary their pleasures.

Indicative prices (2025-2026 season)

As a guide, expect to pay around €81.80 per day for an adult 3 Vallées ski pass, with discounts available for multi-day passes. Children under 5 ski for free, and there are discounts for 5-18 year olds and seniors over 75. Consider family passes, which offer additional discounts.

Why shop online?

Buying your ski passesin advance on the official Méribel websitehas several advantages: you avoid the sometimes long queues during peak season, you can top up an existing card, and certain periods offer preferential online rates. Plan to buy your ski passes at least one week before your arrival.

Preparing your equipment: what to pack in your suitcase?

At an altitude of 1,800 meters, weather conditions can be very different from those in the valley. Here is the essential equipment you need to enjoy the slopes in complete safety.

Ski or snowboard equipment

If you have your own equipment, check its condition before departure: bindings adjusted, edges sharpened, bases waxed. For rentals, we recommend booking online a few days before your arrival. The Intersport Le Creux de l’Ours store, located less than a two-minute walk from our apartment, offers an online booking service with quick pickup on site.

Technical clothing

The key to comfort in the mountains is the three-layer system: a breathable base layer (thermal underwear), an insulating layer (fleece or thin down jacket), and a waterproof and windproof outer layer (ski jacket and pants). Don't forget special ski socks—regular sports socks often cause blisters.

Protective accessories

Helmets are not mandatory but strongly recommended, especially for children and beginners. You should also bring warm, waterproof gloves (with a spare pair), ski goggles suitable for the light conditions (category 2 or 3), and sunglasses for breaks on the terrace.

Sun protection

At high altitudes, UV radiation is particularly intense, amplified by the reflection off the snow. Bring sunscreen with an SPF of 50, a protective lip balm, and don't hesitate to reapply several times throughout the day, even when it's cloudy.

Organize your transportation to Méribel

There are several options available to you for reaching the station, depending on your departure point and preferences.

By car

From Lyon, it takes about 2 hours by car via the A43 motorway, then Albertville and Moûtiers. From Paris, the journey takes about 6 hours. Please note: in winter, snow equipment (winter tires or chains) is mandatory on mountain roads. Covered and uncovered parking is available at the resort.

By train

The nearest SNCF train station is Moûtiers – Salins – Brides-les-Bains, served by TGV trains from Paris (4.5 hours) and regional trains from Lyon or Chambéry. Regular shuttle buses then provide a connection to Méribel in around 45 minutes. Book your transfers in advance, especially during school holidays.

By plane

Méribel is easily accessible from Geneva Airport (2 hours by car), Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport (2 hours), and Chambéry Airport (1 hour 15 minutes). Private or shared shuttle services are available—again, advance booking is strongly recommended.

Non-skiing activities: what to do in Méribel?

Méribel is not just about ski slopes. The resort offers many activities for non-skiers, on rest days, or simply for a change of pace.

Outdoor activities

Outdoor enthusiasts can try snowshoeing on marked trails accessible to all, cross-country skiing on the Nordic trails of the Altiport plateau, or sledding on dedicated slopes. Mountain walks offer exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

Relaxation and well-being

After all that effort, it's time to relax: several spas and wellness centers offer relaxing treatments, steam rooms, saunas, and jacuzzis. Mountain restaurants and sunny terraces are perfect for a gourmet break with a view of the peaks.
