Guide to the slopes of Méribel for beginners and families – Winter 2026
Méribel is an ideal resort for the whole family, whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier. Its varied ski area offers slopes suitable for all levels and numerous options for progressing safely while enjoying exceptional scenery.
I learned to ski in 1985 on the slopes of Altiport and was able to teach my children from our accommodation in Mottaret. We loved our first family descent on the gentle slopes of Mottaret: the children were delighted and so was I. The view of the snow-covered mountains is incredible!
Recommended trails for beginners and families
For those who are new to skiing or want to enjoy a gentle experience with their family, Méribel offers several accessible and safe slopes:
- Méribel-Mottaret: the Combe chairlift (first section) and the gentle slopes around Mottaret are perfect for your first descents.
- La Truite trail: connects Mottaret to Méribel, ideal for families and beginners.
- Rhodos gondola lifts: access to the Altiport slopes, with wide, secure areas suitable for beginners.
- Play areas: introductory courses with slalom modules, small jumps, and games for having fun while progressing.
To get the most out of the La Truite slope, we recommend going in the morning when the snow is fresh and the slope is quiet. Avoid the end of the day when more experienced skiers return to Méribel at high speed.
You can contact the Méribel Guides Office for safe guidance. They offer guided hikes suitable for all levels.
Trails for experienced skiers
For experienced skiers, Méribel offers a wide choice of red and black runs, as well as varied itineraries in the 3 Vallées ski area.
- Recommended areas: Mont Vallon or Côte Brune, offering technical descents and exceptional panoramic views.
- Access: via the Platières gondola lift.
Méribel's central location in the heart of the 3 Vallées makes it easy to navigate between the different sectors, facilitating access to varied slopes and more demanding routes.
Thrill seekers can start with the Platières gondola lifts and then the Bouquetin chairlift for their first run, moving on to Cote Brune for incredible views and then Mont Vallon for a long, technical descent.
We particularly enjoyed the slope on the face of the mountain from the Olympic Express chairlift, a challenging women's downhill course from the 1992 Olympic Games.
Take the gondolas early, before the ski schools leave, to avoid the crowds.
Practical tips
- Always bring a helmet, suitable eyewear, and warm, breathable clothing.
- For beginners, consider the Mini Pass: a reduced-price pass that gives you access to beginner areas and the first ski lifts.
- For experienced skiers, opt for the 3 Vallées ski pass.
- Follow the signs and markings to ensure everyone's safety on the slopes.
- Book your passes online to avoid queues at the ticket office.
We always recommend checking the weather conditions before setting off. In case of heavy fog, be very careful and if you are on the slopes, stay between the poles, making sure you can see them clearly as they are different on the left and right.
Mini checklist for your ski trip
For a successful ski trip, remember to bring:
- Suitable skis, poles, and boots
- Helmet and gloves
- Sunglasses and ski goggles
- Warm and waterproof clothing
If you are traveling with young children, consider bringing a small bag with spare gloves, hot chocolate, and wipes. It could save your morning of skiing!
